For this exercise each participant will do two brief interviews. In the first, you will ask someone about their experience of something with which you are very familiar (e.g., a man might ask another man to describe what it is like to shave his face in the morning). In the second, you will ask someone about their experience of something you are completely unfamiliar with (a lifelong speaker of English might ask someone who learned English as an adult about the experience).

You should record the conversations and analyze them in terms of self presentation, interaction rituals, the use of short cuts and "ya know," things not asked, things not said, etc. as well as reflecting on your own efforts to take advantage of your "native" knowledge or to suppress it or to overcome your naïveté or inhabit it.
