Recipes for Action

From Restak, R. The Playful Brain

"Choose two places in your house that are as far apart as possible. Without moving, close your eyes and imagine walking from one place to the other. Notice your path. Then write down instructions for how to walk the path.

Now walk the path holding the instructions. How accurate were your instructions? What sorts of mistakes did you make?

Revise your instructions so they are more accurate.

For this next part you'll need the help of a friend . Take him to the starting place blindfolded or with his eyes closed. Read the instructions to get your friend to the other place.

Was he able to get to the destination? What sorts of mistakes did you make in your written instructions? Revise your instructions so they are more accurate. What sorts of instructions were particularly helpful? Did your instructions include easily identified landmarks? Sounds? Textures to be felt by the feet? Warnings about dangers to avoid?"
