5 Sept: Social Order
Key points to Social Order Exercise:
- Vicarious control: on the behalf of the society
- Ex: people in a line, and then someone cuts the line, what will the reaction be?
- Social Order changes over countries(insiders and outsiders)
SOCIAL ORDER ONLY WORKS IF WE ALL BUY INTO IT
Hobbes: need a king,no order w/o strong leader(hierarchy)
- "War of all against all"( life is nasty, brutish, and short
Rousseau: Humans are naturally ordered, social order comes about naturally
- "BORN FREE AND EVERYONE IN CHAINS..""(social injustice is the product of society
Smith: 1776 Wealth of Nations-Markets (let our selfish behaviors take over)
- "not from te beneficence of the baker do you get your bread but from his selfishness"(invisible hand
Human Nature->Rationality->cooperation
HUman Nature->Socialness-)cooperation
Socialized=internalized social norms
Oversocialized: built in norms
Undersocialized: no built in norms
- Durkheim argues that there has to be solidarity in order for their to be a social contract— Pre-contractual Solidarity*
- Durkheim solves the problem of division of labor by stating that this division results in complementarity— people in society realize their interdependence, bringing them once again to solidarity and trust
Note on human nature:
- one cannot discuss the origins of society without also discussing what humans are like.
- two different ways to look at it: humans naturally being rational, which leads to cooperation, or humans naturally being social, which will lead to cooperation.
- both have the same end, but different means.
