Engels' Speech at Marx's Funeral
Friedrich Engels, "Speech at the Graveside of Karl Marx," pp. 681-2 in The Marx Engels Reader.
Argument
Great man is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London. Would be great even if he'd only done one of the many things he did:
- Showed that "…the degree of economic development attained by a given people or during a given epoch form[s] the foundation upon which the state institutions, the legal perceptions, art, and even the ideas on religion, of the people concerned have been evolved, and in light of which they must, therefore, be explained, instead of vice versa, as had hitherto been the case" (681.6-7).
- Concept of surplus value.
- Helped form the International Workingmen's Association
