In small institutions this often means individuals can use local and personal wisdom and discretion to deliver better outcomes. But we can extract even more value from this if we focus on providing tools and infrastructure that enhances what the individuals can do. And avoid tools that do the opposite. Lots of things that are good for students and/or teachers do not scale, but for any institution that basically will not ever be big, this can be at least partly ignored. And on the other hand, sometimes tools that are great for working at scale actually decrease the effectiveness of folks working in smaller environments. The trick is recognizing when these are in play.
