We want to accomplish three things today. First is to give you a sense of the shape and feel of the course. Second is to awaken the creative side of your brain. Third is to introduce a group work technique that allows us to efficiently share research and insights with one another so that teams become literally smarter than the sum of their parts.

We will attempt to accomplish these three things in a single exercise that has us exploring the syllabus and the course material in teams.

Before coming to class review the video course trailer for this class and the trailer for a related law school course being offered this semester called "Legal Design Lab."

One of the pedagogical goals of this course is to learn new, effective ways to work as a member of a creative team. On an abstract level this will involve moving back and forth between convergent and divergent thinking and between solo and collaborative work.

We will start by watching together three very short videos, "Human Centered Design for Social Innovation," from IDEO.ORG, DevExplains: What is human-centered design — and why does it matter?, and the Grameen Foundation's "Human Centered Design."

On your workshop guide write a one or two sentence definition of "Human Centered Design" based on what you just heard.

And then, in section 2 of the guide, jot down definitions of each of the following terms in the context of human centered design considering each as a verb and as a noun.
